Cameroonians in China in distress as COVID-19 hits Shanghai, Beijing, other cities

Shanghai, China’s biggest city by economic output has suffered from the COVID-19 lockdown imposed in early April.

Citizens have been staying at home while COVID testing has intensified.

Cameroonians living in some Chinese cities, notably Beijing, and Shanghai say they have suffered the lockdown effect more.

“Our situation in Shanghai now is very deplorable,” Said a Cameroonian resident in the city which is hosting hundreds of same.

“Many Cameroonians have lost their jobs and are faced with difficulties to even extend their visas,” he said adding that: “Due to this Cameroonians in Shanghai are not able to meet up with their daily activities.”

Same source continued “During this time hospitals, schools, shops and even the transportation system have been shut down. We have been locked up in our buildings and rooms and only subjected to a daily COVID 19 TEST. Some of our friends have been transferred to quarantine centers even when their results are negative. Right now, it’s even difficult to go to the hospital if you’re sick.”

“Cameroonians in Shanghai have lost their jobs and some only paid a quarter of their salary, yet we’re expected to pay the house rents and all other bills. We’re really in a difficult situation now. We have written letters to the embassy, to the Minister of external relations asking for assistance but no response yet” Added the source.

Shanghai is set to finally emerge from its lockdown on June 1 after new infections fell sharply.

Officials also said students in junior and senior high school could return to offline classes from June 6.
