Covid-19: nearly 800 people die in Italy on Saturday, no case in Wuhan where disease emerged

Italy recorded 793 deaths on Saturday, with France and Spain and Germany also reporting steep rises in confirmed cases and fatalities.

Italy ordered all but the most essential businesses to close until April 3, tightening a lockdown against the virus. The European country now has 6,557 confirmed cases, a total of 53,578 cases and at least 4,825 deaths, the most fatalities of any country.

The number of Americans under virtual lockdown grew Saturday to over 80 million.

New York alone announced Saturday that the number of coronavirus cases there now tops 10,000, including dozens of prisoners.

Spain on its part has recorded 25496 infections, with 1381 deaths and 2125 cases treated.

But in Wuhan, China where the virus first emerged has reported fourth day with no new cases

Wuhan, said it had no new cases of coronavirus on Saturday, marking the fourth straight day without a new infection.
China reported 46 new confirmed cases, all but one of them imported from overseas.

Globally, there are now more than 308,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, according to Johns Hopkins University. As at now, 13,069 people have died of the disease in the world.
