Custom officers at the Ekok border post in Manyu Division of Cameroon’s South West region have said they are not responsible for the illegal reopening of the border with the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
One of the customs officers speaking to Mimi Mefo Info on anonymity said: “immigration police officers are responsible for the closing and reopening of the borders. It is not the duty of the custom to do that. The customs department knows nothing about that”.
Attempts to get to immigration police officers in Ekok village to react on the allegations have not yielded fruits.
Despite this, residents of Ekok say the nocturnal reopening of the borders with Nigeria in Ekok is done by both the immigration policemen and customs officers.
It should be noted that Cameroon borders remain close officially as the country battles to flatten the coronavirus curve.
