The Dangote Group says it will compensate Ruth Otabor, a young Nigerian student whose leg has been amputated after she was severely injured in an accident by one of the company’s trucks.

Ruth Otabor, the younger sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Ijeoma Josephina Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, has been battling for her life at a hospital after a serious road accident involving a truck belonging to the Dangote Group.

The incident occurred in Auchi, Edo State, in Nigeria just days after Ruth graduated from Auchi Polytechnic, marking what should have been the beginning of a bright future.

Eyewitnesses say the Dangote truck rammed into her, inflicting devastating injuries.

Images circulated online show one of her legs has already been amputated and there are fears the other may also need to be removed.

Ruth’s condition remains critical. She is currently on life support and has been placed on a colostomy bag, as she is unable to pass urine and stool normally due to internal injuries.

The truck driver reportedly fled the scene but was later arrested, amid public outrage and allegations of negligence and possible attempts at a cover-up.

The case drew social media outburst as Nigerians demanded for full compensation from the Dangote Group, owned by Africa’s wealthiest man, Akiko Dangote.

Dangote Industries Responds

In a statement dated August 14, 2025, Dangote Industries acknowledged the incident and outlined the steps it has taken since the tragedy.

“Following the recent road accident in Auchi, Edo State, involving one of our trucks, which sadly resulted in injury to Mrs. Ruth Otabor, senior officials from Dangote Cement Plc, together with our Insurance team, promptly visited the scene, engaged with law enforcement authorities, and visited the victim and her family at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Edo State,” the statement read.

The company stressed its “unwavering commitment” to the well-being of those affected and promised full medical support and appropriate compensation in line with its welfare policy.

“Our thoughts remain with Mrs. Ruth Otabor and her loved ones, and we wish her a full and speedy recovery,” the statement concluded.

For now, the Otabor family clings to hope as Ruth fights for her life in the hospital.

Friends, fans, and supporters of Phyna have taken to social media to call for prayers, justice, and accountability to ensure that the story of a young woman whose dreams were shattered on the wake of a new chapter is not forgotten.
