The Ministry of Defence says it is poised to put an and to a series of attacks by “irredentist terrorists” in Akwaya subdivision in Manyu, South West Region.
Navy Captain Atonfack Guemo Cyrille made the revelation in a June 28 press release addressing the latest waves of attacks in Ballin village in Akwaya.
“Heavily armed assailants estimated at about one hundred broke into the home of an elected representative of the nation, Honourable Aka Martin,’ the release read.
The assailants, it went on, opened gunfire and set ablaze the home of the lawmaker and the coffin of his late brother. They only retreated following the intervention of the forces of law and order.
Yet, their carnage was far from over: “divided into several groups, these irredentists simultaneously attacked the local Gendarmerie post, burned down several homes and the Ballin health centre…”
The ministry of defence placed the number of deaths at 32 including some Nigerians. Four of the said attackers, it added, were killed and some injured and on the run, as locals tried to wade off the attack.
Victims of the attack the army spokesperson went on, evacuated those with serious situations to the Buea regional hospital.
The army’s statement comes after multiple of such incidents over the past weeks. Yet, authorities have remained mute, turning a deaf ear to the pleas of locals.
Many fear the confrontations between conflicting villages involved may only get worse if no intervention is done.
