Ebolowa: Two Catechists Suspended Over Witchcraft Allegations

Two catechists serving at a local Parish in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ebolowa have been suspended from pastoral duties after serious allegations of witchcraft linked to the recent death of Father Raphaël Magloire Mintong.

In a decree signed on June 28, 2025, the Parish Priest of Saints Philippe and Jacques in Ngoulémakong, located in the South Region, announced the immediate suspension of Mr Benoite Onana, the head catechist, and Mr. Gérard Zambo, a fellow catechist from the village of Messok.

According to the parish’s official release, the decision was taken in response to “allegations made against them as being formidable sorcerers” and accusations “brought against them as being responsible for the death of Father Raphaël Magloire Mintong.”

The suspension decree states that “in view of their counter-testimony before the people of God,” the two lay church workers are barred from exercising any pastoral function in the parish effective immediately.

Father Mintong’s death has stirred emotional reactions within the Catholic community, and the accusations of spiritual foul play have raised eyebrows.

The Church has not disclosed any forensic or medical findings linking the catechists to the priest’s death, nor has civil legal action been mentioned at this time.
