Cameroonian asylum seekers on hunger strike

About 14 Cameroonian migrants currently stuck in the Caribbean have embarked on a hunger strike as a means of forcing their entry into the United States of America.

They began this strike on June 9, 2023, after their demand for asylum in the United States stalled, leaving them trapped in the Caribbean Islands.

Information reaching us also reveal the asylum seekers are survivors of a shipwreck as they braved the odds to journey to the USA.

They were quickly taken into custody upon their arrival in Saint Kitts and Nevis, where the local government assured them that the United Nations agency for refugees had taken their demand for refugee status into consideration.

They have also been provided with humanitarian assistance and accommodation by the authorities of Saint-Kitts and Nevis while their requests are being processed.

While in the Caribbean, these Cameroonians will also be protected from all attempts at repatriating them back to Cameroon. The migrants meanwhile plan to stick to their hunger strike, till their demands are granted.

It should be recalled that these Cameroonians are part of a group that left Antigua and Barbuda island in March, heading for the Virgin Islands in the United States of America.

The boat on which they had embarked this dangerous journey, unfortunately, capsized not very far away from the Island of Saint-Kitts and Nevis, drowning several other migrants.
