The government of the Republic of Gabon has broken the silence, banning the issuing of visas to people from twenty countries that make up the European Union.
In a circular addressed to Gabonese diplomatic and consular missions in different countries in the world Wednesday July 1, 2020, the Secretary General of the country Ginette Arondo epouse Edzang states that visas should not be issue to people from twenty seven European countries.
This includes for tourism, short stays, business travels and people wishing to enter the country for professional reasons.
The circular however states that officials assigned by the government of their country to carry out a particular activity can obtain a visa.
The decision has been described by many as a drastic and daring one taken by the government of Ali Bongo Ondimba.
The circular has not stated a clear reason for such an action.
Last week, countries in the Schengen area (European Union ) issued a travel ban on many countries in the world. Their reason is to prevent the importation of new cases of coronavirus.
In Cameroon, Hon. Joshua Osih of the Social Democratic Front SDF condemned the move calling on president Paul Biya to take responsibility and ban people from European countries too from entry Cameroon.
