Following the coup against President Alpha Condé of Guinea Conakry led by Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, and an installation of a transition government, the U.S has demanded that the transition Government be handed over to a civilian to head.
Colonel Mamady Doumbouya was on Friday sworn in as the Interim President of the Transition Government. The leadership of the military junta will be expected to organize elections and orchestrate a transition back to civilian rule.
A statement from the U.S State Department however reveals that the Super Power wants the Transition Government to be led exclusively by civilian rule.
“The United States calls on the military junta in Guinea to appoint a civilian to head the Transition Government and to commit to a timetable for free and fair elections and a return of the country to civil law, democracy and the ‘constitutional order,” the U.S State Department has said.
The U.S also conditioned that the Civilian-led transition Government should include key members of the Opposition party, as well as the marginalized groups.
