A health disaster is feared in the nation’s capital owing to unending stinking garbage heaps have overwhelmed the city. Many denizens say the situation poses a danger to the health of the people especially with the coming of the rains.
The situation has been so for weeks. Prior to Labour Day, workers of sanitation company, HYSACAM had not been seen at work for days and it was believed they were on strike. The situation is said not to be unconnected to the respect of financial engagements with the City Council and other government services.
In the face of this confusion, piles of dirt have surfaced all around the city even blocking the highway in some cases.
Even though HYSACAM workers resumed the clearing of the heaps of garbage Monday, the pace appears to be slow. This is coupled with the multiple public holidays witnessed over the past days.
Many have expressed worry over the situation given that the national day May 20 is just weeks ahead.
The garbage heaps add to a scene in the nation’s political capital where security controls have multiplied slowing circulation. “They blocked the street along the National Assembly to permit soldiers prepare for the May 20th parade and it is frustrating movement,” a taxi driver declared.
The situation he said, is expected to ensue until National Day on May 20. Corroborating the former’s story, another said he had to change routes twice just to get his passengers across town for their daily routines.
