The state of Cameroon is to stand trial before the Yaounde Court of First Instance on Thursday, October 15, 2020, as from 2:00 pm.

In a release published by a team of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement party (MRC) lawyers, it says they are dragging the state to court to explain reasons for military presence around the residence of professor Maurice Kamto since the 21st of September 2020.

Professor Maurice Kamto’s residence in Yaounde has been militarized with no member of his family allowed to get in or out since the 21st of September 2020; the eve of a nationwide protest called by leaders and allies of his MRC party.

The protest against poor management of the Anglophone crisis and bad electoral laws was meant to unseat the regime of President Paul Biya. The later has been in power for nearly 40 years.

Kamto’s lawyers have issued a stern warning to the Minister of Territorial Administration, MINAT, the Delegate General for National Security, DGSN, and the Secretary of State for Defenspeacefulo according to them, are those particularly behind the house arrest.

“We the lawyers defending Syvain Souop announce a civil process on the situation of our client Professor Maurice Kamto in the context of repression following a peacefully march of September 22, 2020,” Barrister Hippolyte B.T Meli who signed the release on behalf of his colleagues said.

Earlier, the lawyers called for the withdrawal of military men from Kamto’s premises, a call the government is yet to heed to.

His political party has on several occasions condemned the move, describing it as an outright act of dictatorship.
