A 39-year-old scientist originally from Zimbabwe, Dr Fortune Gomo, was found seriously injured on South Road, Dundee. She was pronounced dead at the scene on Saturday at around 16:25. Dr Gomo’s death is currently being treated as murder following a post-mortem examination by Police Scotland.

A 20-year-old suspect has been charged and is scheduled to appear at Dundee Sheriff Court later.

Investigation Underway, No Wider Public Risk

Detective Superintendent Peter Sharp, leading the investigation, expressed condolences to Dr Gomo’s family. He also confirmed that specialist officers are supporting them.

“Firstly, my thoughts remain with Fortune’s family at this incredibly sad time. They are being supported by specialist officers and I would ask that their privacy is respected,” he said.

Det Supt Sharp emphasised that the incident does not pose a wider risk to the public and that police enquiries are ongoing with multiple lines of investigation. He also cautioned against speculation, noting, “I am also acutely aware of content circulating on social media and would urge the public not to speculate about the circumstances of the incident.”

He encouraged anyone with information to contact Police Scotland and reassured the community about the increased police presence in the area.

Academic and Professional Background of Dr Fortune Gomo

Dr Gomo, who lived locally in Dundee, was also a graduate of the University of Dundee and had recently joined Scottish Water as a senior service planner in water resource planning. Prof Nigel Seaton, interim principal and vice-chancellor of the University of Dundee, shared details of her career:

“Dr Gomo was a PhD student and then postdoctoral research assistant in geography at the University of Dundee until February 2022. She had recently joined Scottish Water and was thriving in her career.”

Prof Seaton described the event as “a truly shocking event in our city and for our University community,” highlighting the impact on African colleagues and students connected to Dr Gomo.

He added, “Our thoughts are with her family, friends and colleagues at this tragic time.”

The university’s Chaplaincy Centre will also open on Monday to offer support to students affected by Dr Gomo’s death.

Community Reaction and Tributes

Local community members have paid tribute at the scene. A woman wearing a scarf featuring the Zimbabwe flag’s colours was seen laying flowers near the site on Sunday.

Angela Machonesa, a former school and university peer from Zimbabwe, posted on Facebook expressing the loss felt by many: “Her brilliance in the classroom was only matched by her emotional intelligence. She was the kind of person you’d go to when you needed clarity, not just of mind, but of heart.”

She further stated, “We are heartbroken. We are angry. We are disoriented. But we are also united in one voice: Fortune Gomo mattered. Her life mattered. Her legacy must never be forgotten.”
