1 The Government of Cameroon has opted to increase military presence in the North West and South West Regions, as measures to ensure a successful school year 2019/2020. This came out of a security meeting presided over by the Minister Delegate at the presidency of the Republic of Cameroon in charge of Defense, Joseph Beti Assomo in Yaoundé, this Friday, August 30th, 2019. The intensification of military operations would also extend to the Adamawa, the Far North and East Regions.There have been questions as to whether heavy military deployment in the anglophone regions can compel kids to go to school or frighten ensure that Ambazonian fighters remain in their hideouts.
2 Dr Nick Ngwanyam MD of St Louis University Institute has challenged anglophone elites, ministers, and top officials campaigning for school resumption in the restive Anglophone Regions of Cameroon to withdraw their kids from schools East of the Mungo and send them to the North West and South West Regions. The Educationists says the security atmosphere in Anglophone Cameroon cannot permit effective school resumption and stakeholders should learn to be truthful, address the real problem and schools will resume without any campaign. He regrets that the peace initiative conference billed to take place yesterday in Douala did not hold.
3 Parents in the Meme Division South West Region of Cameroon have been challenged to shun fears, brave the odds and send their children to school come September 2nd, 2019. The message came from CPDM elites who rallied over 1500 students and pupils at the Kumba City Council Hall this Friday, August 30, 2019. The event that brought together Senators, MPs and other CPDM locally elected officials of Meme was aimed at distributing didactic material aids to students and pupils affected by the worsening Anglophone crisis. Many have been wondering why the children of the same elites have been enrolled in schools East of the Mungo.
4 The SDO for Ndian Division says he has taken a rendezvous with pupils and students to meet at 7.am on Monday, September 2nd, 2019. Mr Forwang Lawrence was speaking in Mundemba today Friday while handing over some school materials to learners and also announced to the students that there will be no PTA fee this year in Ndian Division.
5 It is uncertain if schools will resume in some French-speaking localities bordering the conflict-stricken North West and South West Regions of Cameroon. One of such localities is Fongo Tongo in the Menoua Division of the West Region of Cameroon. Fongo Tongo like Mombo and Penda Mboko in the Mungo division of the Littoral Region got deserted after repeated attacks from gunmen believed to have crossed over from the Anglophone Regions. Life is yet to return to normal in these localities and some inhabitants told Mimi Mefo Info that they are worried about the security atmosphere and not willing to risk sending their children to school come Monday, September 2nd, 2019.
6 The North West Regional delegate of secondary education has attested to the fact that schools can effectively resume next Monday in some divisional and sub-divisional headquarters in the Region. Wilfried Wabang Ndong admits this is despite the presence of security threats in the region.
7 Traders in Njombe, Penja and Loud in the Littoral Region of Cameroon say the sale of educational materials is witnessing a very negative turn over this year. According to them, parents have been complaining of the lack of money and the difficult economic situation in Cameroon.
8 The governor of the North West Region of Cameroon has accused some civil servants of using their salaries to sponsor terrorism in the Region. Adolph Lele L’Afrique speaking in the town of Fundong in Boyo Division, says many civil servants in the region due to fear of insecurity have abandoned their duty posts but are still harvesting money from the state coffers.
9 Despite several attacks along the road to Fundong Boyo Division in the North West Region of Cameroon, Governor Adolph Lele L’Afrique has called on parents to brave the odds and send their children to school. The convoy of the governor suffered several attacks and had to remove several roadblocks mounted by separatist fighters along the road. Also, humanitarian aid from the governor of the North West to the population of Boyo division ended up being stored at the SDO’s office. The governor and his delegation met a practically empty Boyo Division as over 90% of the population have deserted their towns and villages due to insecurity.
10 Inhabitants of Donga Mantung in the North West Region say they fear for their lives following threats from Ambazonian fighters. Ambazonian fighters popularly known as ‘Amba Boys’ accuse those from Donga Mantung of being ‘enablers’ a euphemism for ‘traitors’. The accusation is based on the fact that citizens of the locality appear to have been obeying instructions from the government of Cameroon. They have been threatened with an imminent attack.
11 Cabral Libii Li Lingue has presented his newly created political party to the Minister of Territorial Administration. The political party called Cameroon Party for National Reconciliation (CPNR) was put in place a few months ago. Cabral Libii came third during the 2018 presidential election under Parti Universe of Prof. Prosper Nkou Nvondo. Cabral Libii is equally the coordinator of a movement called “11 Million”.
12 The people of Ivory Coast are this evening paying their final homage to the fallen musician Ange Didier alias DJ Arafat. A musical concert is taking place at the Felix Houphuet stadium with the body of the musician. Several musicians across the African continent are taking part in the concert.
13 Nigeria’s plan to reducing spending on food through the restriction of access to dollars for importers is likely to have the unintended consequence of rather threatening food supplies and pushing up prices. The measure came after the country’s President Muhammadu Buhari on August 13th, 2019, ordered the central bank to halt dollar supply for food imports. President Buhari argues that food security has been achieved and agricultural production has increased.
