Separatist fighters have demanded the sum of 100,000 US dollars (over 60 million FCFA), for the release of those kidnapped in Nchang, Manyu Division of the South West Region.

They were kidnapped on Friday, September 16, 2022, at the St Mary’s Catholic Parish Nchang after which the building was set ablaze.

Speaking on BBC’s “Focus on Africa”, Arch-Bishop Andrew Nkea of the Bamenda Arch diocese said: “They are demanding a hundred thousand dollars and they have been arguing and coming down until they are somewhere now around fifty thousand dollars.”

According to the ArchBishop, the abductors claim the church has not been supportive throughout the struggle.

His words: “They are claiming that the church has not been supporting the struggle for independence by the separatist fighters and so they want money. That’s is all that is coming through.”

He however reiterated that the church is not ready to donate anything to the said abductors.

“We don’t just have one dollar to pay for this kind of thing because we are setting a precedence that we can never continue.”

Mgr Aloysius Fondong, Bishop of the Mamfe Diocese recently visited the scene when he strictly condemned the act and assured the Christians the Catholic Church would no longer return to the village.
