Normalized impunity! Soldiers gun down two women in Andek, Momo Division

The Cameroon Ministry of Defense has sent out an apology to the public after two women were gunned to death by some government forces in Andek, Momo division of the North West Region.

The apology was tendered in a release signed by army spokesperson, Atonfack Guemo Cyrille on September 21, 2022.

According to the release, the tragic incident took place on Monday, September 19, 2022, when three government forces opened fire on two women aged 49 and 47.

“The Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defence sincerely regrets this tragic incident and extends his deepest condolences to the bereaved families of the victims,” the release indicated.

It further disclosed that the said government forces have been disarmed and detained: “As a precautionary measure, the three soldiers of the patrol were disarmed, demobilized, withdrawn from the area, and detained at the Mbengwi Gendarmerie Unit.”

Reacting to the incident, the Mayor of the Andek Subdivision in a release signed September 20, 2022, strongly condemned the act. He said: “… This irresponsible, cruel and unacceptable act has come at a moment that the Andek Council has been doing everything for life to return to normalcy in the municipality and for the internally displaced people to return home.”

In the release, the Senior Divisional Officer for the Momo Division appealed to the population to remain calm.

“The SDO appeals to the population to remain calm as investigations have been opened to bring the culprits to book so that the appropriate sanctions shall be applied on them for this terrible act,” revealed the mayor of Andek.

According to the Ministry of Defence,
Investigations have been opened by the local administrative and judicial authorities as well as the Defence and Security Forces.

This is not the first time government forces are killing or torturing civilians in the Anglophone regions. In multiple instances, arrests have been announced but no subsequent action taken.
