Some members of the North West Regional Assembly (NWRA)whose identities have been concealed for security reasons have described the handing over of 200 benches to schools across the region as the “biggest joke in 2022.”
During the clossing ceremony of the 8th session of the NWRA, September 14, 2022, 200 benches were donated to schools in the region, a move that was received with a lot of mixed reactions by members.
The gesture was not appreciated by some members of the house who accussed the executive of fighting for their interest and not those of locals, reason why only 200 benches were distributed to schools in the entire North West Region.
Talking to MMI one of the female members of the NWRA described the move as a “joke”,
“This is the biggest joke since this year started. I am shocked at this. When it comes to the executives debating about their allowances and other benefits, you need to hear the figures they go for. What can 200 benches do, how many schools are there in the region? This is a shame,” she said.
Other members could be heard trying to do a rough arithmetic on the distribution of the benches. We cornered one of them who said,
“About 28 benches will go to one division. We have seven divisions in the region with more than 30 subdivisions. A rough arithmetic will indicate that about 3 benches will go to a sub division with hundreds of schools. This is insignificant and crazy.”
The NWRA has also come under fire for trying to ‘steal’ credit for the increase in enrollment for the 2022/2023 academic year.
Many say the Assembly has been acting as though the increase in the number of children in schools is thanks to them whereas it is thanks to the efforts of parents, civil society members, the media amongst others.
The North West Region of Cameroon is one of two English-speaking regions which has been plagued by conflict over the last 6 years leading to mass disruption in academic activities.
