A wave of shock and sorrow has gripped residents of Nsam, a neighbourhood in Yaoundé, since a tragic fire claimed the life of a 10-day-old baby. The incident, which occurred in broad daylight, left the family’s home completely reduced to ashes and the community in deep mourning.

According to early witness accounts, the fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical malfunction, possibly linked to a spark from an electric pole situated near the house. Residents reported seeing the spark moments before the fire rapidly spread through the structure, engulfing the wooden building within minutes.

The baby’s mum, who was reportedly away on a brief errand, returned to find their home in flames. Neighbours recount scenes of despair as she screamed helplessly, attempting to rush into the burning house to save her infant. Her efforts, however, were futile as the blaze had already consumed most of the interior.

Members of the fire-fighting brigade were called to the scene but could do little to save the situation. By the time they managed to extinguish the flames, it was too late, the newborn had already been burnt beyond recognition.

The tragedy has reignited public concern over frequent fire outbreaks in residential neighbourhoods, often linked to faulty wiring and delayed emergency responses.

The incident has left the Nsam community deeply shaken, with residents calling for greater vigilance, improved infrastructure, and better safety standards to prevent such devastating losses in the future.
