Ousmanou Harouna: 26-year-old Police Commissioner Inspires Cameroonians

At just 26 years old, Ousmanou Harouna has become one of Cameroon’s youngest police commissioners, captivating the nation with his remarkable journey from a shepherd’s son in Bogdibo, North Region, to a high-ranking officer in the National Security force.

His story, which has gone viral on TikTok and Facebook, is seen as one of a few exceptions in a country where top government positions are typically held by officials over 60.

Among them is the Delegate General for National Security Martin Mbarga Nguélé (93), President Paul Biya (92), Senate President Marcel Niat Njifenji (90), and National Assembly Speaker Cavaye Yeguie Djibril (85).

Harouna first gained prominence in 2022 at the University of Ngaoundéré’s Faculty of Legal and Political Sciences, where he excelled in Public Law.

Known for never needing a makeup exam, he graduated with a Master’s I degree at 22, earning a stellar 14/20, which is above the 12/20 required for a Master’s II admission.

However, the university failed to grant him admission into Master’s II.

The institution explained that just 25 candidates were needed for Master II in Public Law and Ousmanou Harouna came in the 26th position after they considered aspects like score, age, gender and region of origin.

Although this sparked public outrage and the university was accused of discrimination, this did not dampen Ousmanou’s spirit.

He applied for the police commissioner recruitment exam and was admitted into the Higher National School of Police in Yaounde.

On July 11, 2024, at the age of 25, he assumed his role as a police commissioner, a feat that has since ignited social media platforms.

A TikTok post featuring Harouna in his commissioner’s uniform went viral, with users praising his determination.

In a nation where youth are often relegated to low-level civil service roles, Harouna’s ascent is a rare exception, and has resonated with many.

His story has sparked conversations on social media, with users hailing him as a symbol of hope for young Cameroonians.
