In a rare and unusual address to the nation Tuesday May 19th 2020, President Paul Biya focused on how to tackle the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in the country.

Paul Biya called on all Cameroonians to respect COVID-19 preventive measures put in place by the government. This includes constant washing of hands with soap, use of hand sanitizers maintaining social distancing and wearing of face masks .

To the president, a local industry in Cameroon is already producing masks with standards put in place by the World Health Organisation.

“Maintain preventive measures until a drug will be found “. The statement from the President of the Republic, commentators say, publicly undermines the value of a coronavirus cure produced by Archbishop Samuel Kleda of the metropolitan diocese of Douala.

To an inhabitant of Douala commenting after listening to the speech: “The fact that the president did not even mention that there is medicine in Cameroon treating COVID-19 patients in Douala and other places is an indication that he doesn’t recognise the medicine and other traditional drugs produced by other Cameroonians”.

“Archbishop Samuel Kleda says he has treated over 500 coronavirus patients, yet that has not been recognised by the regime of Paul Biya,” he added in total disappointment.

The president appreciates health workers in Cameroon for working tirelessly, risking their lives on daily bases to treat people suffering from a highly contagious virus.

On those who have contributed into the COVID-19 solidarity fund, the president expressed appreciation while calling on others to emulate. He points that this is not the time for politics but for people to think and act collectively to bar the way against the deadly pandemic.

In the domain of economy, President Paul Biya recognises the economic difficulties the country is going through as a result of the pandemic. He called on Cameroonians not to panic and to shun what is written on the social media on the pandemic or the economic situation.

He expressed confidence government will be able to maintain the economic stability of the country.
