In the days following the massive campaign rallies across the country, ELECAM offices are now recording a noticeable rise in people coming to collect their voter cards.
The rush is especially strong in big cities like Douala and Yaoundé, where young people have been showing up daily to get ready for the October 12 presidential election.
The renewed interest comes after the huge turnouts seen at campaign events by opposition candidates such as Issa Tchiroma Bakary, Cabral Libii, and Tomaino Ndam Njoya.
Many observers believe these rallies have awakened a sense of urgency among young voters who want to play a role in shaping the country’s future.
Compared to the last presidential election in 2018, voter participation is expected to be much higher this year.
Cameroon had about 6.6 million registered voters in the last election. Today, ELECAM estimates that more than 8 million voters are on the rolls, a sign that more citizens are ready to take part in the democratic process.
The atmosphere at ELECAM offices tells a story of growing determination. In Douala’s Bonanjo neighborhood and several districts of Yaoundé, long queues form daily as people wait patiently to collect their cards. Many of them are first-time voters, driven by the excitement and hope that followed the recent rallies.
Officials have continued to encourage everyone who has registered to collect their cards early and turn out on election day.
Civic groups have also been spreading the same message, reminding citizens that real change can only happen if people show up and cast their votes.
As the campaign enters its final days, the energy across the country is rising. Whether the excitement will carry through to election day remains to be seen, but this renewed public interest shows that Cameroonians, especially the youth are ready to make their voices count.
