A 30-year-old pregnant midwife, Achale Gethrude Tabot, lost her life on November 18, 2023, at the Sub-divisional Hospital in Muea, Buea, reportedly due to an ill-fated operation conducted by unqualified doctors.
The shocking revelation has left the victim’s family in mourning and outrage, fueling demands for justice and accountability.
Gethrude Tabot, a midwife serving at CMA Mutengene, tragically met her demise during an operation that has raised serious concerns about the competence of medical practitioners at the Muea hospital.
The family holds the doctors responsible for the operation accountable for her death.
Mrs. Tabe Elizabeth Ojong, the grieving mother of the deceased and a retired midwife herself, expressed her inconsolable grief to My Media Prime. She urged the government to take prompt action to ensure those responsible for her daughter’s death face justice.
The family alleges that the operation occurred under suboptimal conditions, lacking essential elements such as proper lighting, adequate blood supply, and necessary operation kits, factors they believe contributed to the tragic outcome.
A report from My Media Prime TV has highlighted the distressing circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the news outlet, Reverend Dr. Oben Ernest, the Executive President of the Global Forum for the Defence of Human Rights, believes that Gethrude Tabot was a victim of murder. Dr. Ernest, a Human Rights Defender, decried the alleged use of white robes as a shield, providing a form of immunity to general practitioners who may lack the specialised skills required for surgical procedures.
“The operation was carried out by a general practitioner and not a surgeon,” Dr. Ernest stated in an interview with My Media Prime. “We want justice for Tabot because these general practitioners have been killing people, assassinating human beings using white robes and having a kind of immunity in the name of doctors, and abusing the right to live.”
As the family mourns, the body of Gethrude Tabot currently rests at the Limbe Mile 1 hospital morgue, awaiting burial scheduled for Thursday, November 30, 2023. Meanwhile, the newborn baby, who miraculously survived the ill-fated operation, is receiving medical attention at the Buea Regional Hospital.
The alleged perpetrator, Doctor Ngogang John, is reportedly on the run, intensifying the call for a thorough investigation and legal action against those responsible for the tragic death of Achale Gethrude Tabot.
