Athletes from 11 countries have begun arriving in Buea, South West Region, ahead of the 30th edition of the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope. This is scheduled for Saturday, February 22. The official launching by the Minister of Sports and Physical Education will take place on Friday, February 21. The exact number of participants has not been disclosed. However athletes from Africa and Europe are expected to compete.

Security Measures Intensified in Buea

Ahead of race day, security meetings are being held in Buea to ensure the safety of athletes and spectators. On Tuesday, February 18, Southwest Governor Bernard Okalia Bilai held a closed-door meeting with key stakeholders involved in organizing the event. Discussions focused on reinforcing security measures to prevent any incidents.

This follows a tragic event two years ago when a bomb explosion killed three people and injured several athletes. Separatist groups advocating for a breakaway nation, Ambazonia, claimed responsibility and have historically called for boycotts of major government events. Despite such threats, the people of Buea have consistently turned out in large numbers to support the race.

To bolster security, top military officials, including Brigadier General Benoît Eba Eba and Brigadier General Devine Eko, are currently assessing the situation and holding strategic meetings with military commanders in the region.

Race Readiness and Athlete Testing

Last year’s race proceeded without security incidents. However, it was marked by the unfortunate death of a Kenyan athlete shortly after completing the race. This year, the President of the Cameroon Athletics Federation assured state media that all participating athletes will undergo both national and international medical tests before being cleared to compete.

The race will commence at the Molyko Omnisport Stadium. Participants will then run to the summit of the Chariot of the Gods before returning to the starting point.

On Friday, February 21, all national athletics federations will be represented in a ceremonial march-past before the Minister and the gathered public at the stadium.

With final preparations underway, the stage is set for yet another thrilling edition of the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope.
