South West Regional Council: Executive President ‘confiscates’ power to make public pronouncements

Zachaeus Bakuma Elango, president of the Executive Bureau of the South West Regional Council says “… only the president of the regional executive or an appointed representative is authorised to make public declarations on behalf of the South West regional assembly.”

In a commuque signed May 26, 2021, Zachaeus Bakuma Elango
failed to give precisions on what necessitated the decision several months after the putting in place of the regional council.

He adds that “Consequently all public declarations contrary to the letter and spirit of the present press communique are null and void”.

While calling on the population of the South West to remain calm and have faith with the government, the former divisional officer of Douala 4 subdivision emphasizes the importance of putting in place Regional Councils by the president to address burning issues affecting the people.

By banning all other regional councilors and other officials of the Council in the South West region from making official pronouncements on the functioning of the Regional Council, pundits say it suggests internal disagreement in the handling of the Council.

The South West Regional Council, just like the other nine in Cameroon, have not carried out an activity to justify their presence in the chain of decentralization.
