A band of suspected Amba fighters opened fire on a workers of the waste management company, HYSACAM in Bamenda on Wednesday March 30. The victim whose name MMI got only as Samuel was shot on the leg. He is said to be receiving treatment at a health facility in Bamenda.
Samuel was shot at Old Simplicity in Ntarikon, a neighborhood in Bamenda II Sub Division. A message for them to stop working in the town was sent through him to the company, says a source familiar with the incident.
According to Nde N. a resident of Ntarikon, the suspected Amba boys are trying to stop the cleaning of the town. The situation, he said, is opening the way for cholera to step in.
“With cholera sweeping across the South West region and calls for the population to intensify basic hygiene, attacks on those struggling to clean the town is uncalled for,” Nde stated.
This is not the first time a worker of the said company has ben shot. In January 2021, one was shot and he later died in a health facility in Bamenda. In January 2019, a truck belonging to the same company was burnt down around Government Bilingual High School Atiela in Nkwen, Bamenda III Sub Division.
The driver was seriously beaten by the armed men who also shot and wounded one civilian.The other victim was shot and wounded by soldiers who stormed the area in search of the fighters.
