UBa records first Master’s thesis defense by a visually impaired student

The University of Bamenda has recorded the first MSc thesis defense by a student with visual impairment.

Kum Nji Desmond became the first-ever visually impaired student in the University of Bamenda to successfully defend a master’s thesis recently after he defended his master’s thesis on the topic “Crime of the Aggression and the independence of the prosecutor under the Rome statute”.

After his defense, and examination by the jury, he bagged home an EXCELLENT and his work accepted by the jury.

The visually impaired student proceeded to obtain his master’s degree in law, after obtaining his Bachelor’s degree as the best graduating student in the department of English Private Law in 2017.

Kum Nji Desmond although being visually impaired from birth has not allowed the circumstances of his birth to limit him academically despite facing numerous challenges “…I had difficulties as far as physical access is concerned, talking about the infrastructure in UBa, consistent power failure amongst others…” are some of the difficulties he outlined.

He has succeeded to breach the educational barrier where many of his peers could not do and is determined to proceed with a Ph.D. and impact knowledge on others.

The master’s degree holder who hails from Menchum division in the Northwest Region is president of the Association of Students with Disabilities in the University of Bamenda.
