A woman has been severely beaten and thrown in jail in Ombessa, Mbam, and Itounou, a locality in the Centre region of Cameroon, by her nephews, Ayebe Yekene, Belingue Yekene, and their younger brother who are all military men.

The nephews are accusing the woman whose name MMI is still to get for refusing to vacate their family house in the village, which she has been occupying.

The young men reportedly attacked their aunt on June 27, 2023, at her home in Ombessa beating her up, before dragging her to the local police station, where she was thrown in a cell and has been there for over a week now.

The woman’s neighbors say the nephews had been demanding that she vacate the house for several months. They add that the woman’s refusal to leave was due to the fact that she had nowhere else to go.

The attack on the woman has sparked outrage in Ombessa. Many people are calling for the nephews to be brought to justice. They say that the attack is a clear case of gender-based violence.
