On March 15 2020, Cameroon shut down all its schools to prevent the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. While this has curbed disease’s further spread, the action has come at a price.
Students of the School of Geology and Mining Engineering (EGEM) in Meiganga, Adamawa Region of Cameroon have said bandits have taken the advantage to rob their rooms since leaving they left school hostels in respect of coronavirus restriction measures.
“These acts of theft are happening mostly in hostels where all the students have travelled” a student explains.
“The frequent seizure of electricity here is also facilitating thefts” he explains further
Days ago, the Yaounde government uplifted the ban on schools for some classes and levels of education. Authorities have, however, continued to encourage the strict application of COVID-19 safety rules in place.
