Prominent Rights Lawyer, Ewule Lyonga, Bags Another Award

Prominent human rights lawyer, Barrister Edward Ewule Lyonga, has been celebrated once again for his selflessness in fighting for those who seek for justice.

He was recognized by Senior Legal Luminary, Barrister Alice Nkom and and seasoned Civil Society Activist, Edith Kah Walla, during their joint birthday ceremony on Friday, February 28, in Douala.

During the ceremony, Barrister Alice Nkom underscored the relentless efforts of human rights defenders, emphasizing the personal risks involved in their work.

“We put our lives on the line every day to ensure justice for those who need it most. While our work provides hope for the disenfranchised, it is often perceived as a threat by those in power, placing us in constant danger. Our existence is a daily struggle,” she stated.

Similarly, Kah Walla hoped the recognition would inspire award recipients to further advance human rights.

She explained that the decision to transform their birthday celebrations into a recognition event stemmed from a deep-seated desire to drive societal change through meaningful action.

“I proudly celebrate 60 years today, while Maître Alice Nkom is blessed to reach 80. We are grateful for another year of life. However, rather than focusing solely on ourselves, we celebrated those who have made significant strides in human rights advocacy. Even as you work quietly in your respective corners, know your efforts are seen, appreciated, and valued worldwide. Keep pushing forward,” she affirmed.

Award is a “Powerful Motivator”

One on his part, Barrister Edward Lyonga Ewule of Legend Law Firm in Buea, described the recognition as a powerful motivator that reinforces his dedication to the pursuit of justice.

“I am deeply honored and humbled to be recognized by two esteemed figures, Senior Barrister Alice Nkom and Madam Edith Kah Walla, as a trailblazer in human rights advocacy in Cameroon. Beyond their birthday celebrations, they seized the opportunity to acknowledge my humble efforts and those of three other individuals dedicated to justice and human rights. This recognition fuels my resolve to continue advocating for those in need,” he remarked.

As the Principal Counsel of Legend Law Offices in Buea and the founder of the Legend Human Rights Foundation, Barrister Ewule has dedicated his career to defending those who cannot defend themselves.

His work has made a tangible impact on countless lives, solidifying his reputation as a formidable advocate for justice.

This award comes to add to a total of six that Barrister Edward Lyonga Ewule has received in the past five years.

Other awards include the Life Achievement 2024 Rights Defender of the Year, the VIMMA Human Rights Advocate of the Year, the Canadian Embassy 2023 Lawyer of the Year, the Presbyterian Church 2023 Lawyer of the Year, the Dreams Network 2022 Lawyer of the Year, and the PANNAFES 2022 Lawyer of the Year.
