Thomas Awah Junior Leaves Hospital To His Kondengui Cell

The publisher of Aghem News Magazine who is serving an 11-year jail term is feeling much better after receiving treatment for one month.
Members of one of the humanitarian foundations which took care of him, Unity Foundation Cameroon just tweeted:

“Mr Awah returned to his prison cell Tuesday 16th October 2018, after spending a month in hospital. He will go back for follow up on October 30.”

The deteriorating health condition of the Cameroonian journalist jailed at the Kondengui maximum security prison in Yaounde provoked anger and outrage amongst journalists, national and international NGOs like SNJC and CPJ who urged for his immediate and unconditional release.

Pictures of Dzenyagha Thomas Awah Junior in his Kondengui cell showing him in a dire condition provoked widespread condemnation with some journalists launching the hashtag #FreeThomasAwah.

Arrested in Bamenda in January 2017, Thomas Awah, Publisher of the Aghem Voice was on May 25, 2018 sentenced to 11 years in prison for secession, propagating false information, inciting public disorder amonst other charges.

The journalist who has also been suffering from a brain problem for over six years now, that has seen him undergo surgery on several occasions has always denied the charges and maintained he was arrested in the line of duty.

Journalists have continued to call for his release describing is arrest and detention as illegal.
